Age of Champions Spicy by anotherdamian Age of Champions Spicy by anotherdamian
A new character for Age of Champions. I don't name the characters, I just paint them.

Ha, it's probably because I used Virginia Madsen from the Dune intro as ref!

I spent a few minutes laughing at - 'I don't name the character, I just paint them.' comment.

Anyways, I really love the detail you manage to put into these. It's a pit the game can't depict them in a larger size to appreciate it all.

Great work!

I'm glad you understand. When I got the synopsis from marketing on this piece I was like, "...uh, huh? OK, but are you sure?"

Lol! I'm trying to figure out if it was the marketing guys who chose the name or some designer who had some weird inside joke going...

By your use of the word "interesting" I get the feeling that your not so taken by the choice of color :) . The purple supposed to be more of a burgundy/salmon because I was trying to force some of the "spicy" theme into the costume.

You know, maybe if I get a little time on the side I'll go back and give it a few extra goes with color choices. Any recommendations?

Hi Damian,

I can understand why you went with the blue/orange combo. It seems as if she's using some form of water magic, so it'd make sense to have blue water in the background. And the orange is there to help her stand out? I have found that changing up the colour composition can give an illustration a whole new atmosphere or tone. :D Have you tried perhaps making the background light a warmer colour, then making the character a cooler colour? Like, say it's sunset, and that lighting's showing through the ovals by her right hand (our view) and behind her head? But maybe that wouldn't read as well when you shrink it down... I'd suggest trying a more purple/gold combination? Sometimes experimenting with colour is fun.

I'm still an illustrator-in-training, so apologies if my suggestions don't work out very well. But I must say, I'm very inspired by your work! ^__^ And you work at Bioware! I love Bioware <3

oh really? you could give it a try? mmmhhh I don't really know, maybe some blue, blue and a few touch of yellow. Or you can go with the brown/green combo. But these are my preferences, I hope you don't take offence at all. I'm not saying that your work is not good (all the contrary)

i like the way you handle faces and render - but i can't understand why she's bathed in orange light while in an ice cave, does it have anything to do with her powers / magic?

It's magic. Nah, I am usually concerned with having these things read when they are shrunken down to the size of a dime, which is there actual game size.

makes sense now that you put it that way, i've never played the game so it didn't even cross my mind that the image would be shrunk.
Thank you for the answer, i'll keep what you said in mind if i ever make an image that i know will be resized drastically afterward.

I cant believe you work at KN/Bioware. I mean everyone there is talented, but you're truly gifted, man.
What is it like being an inhuman super-artist? Does it feel like magic when you pee?

Thanks man! After going to a figure drawing workshop to find my old pencil and paper skills greatly atrophied, it's really nice to hear your kind words.
