Age of Champions Gorbuses by anotherdamian Age of Champions Gorbuses by anotherdamian
This character is for our Edgar Rice Burroughs themed week. They are cannibalistic inhabitants of Pellucidar, the secret underworld of Earth, who's only memory of their lives before they devolved into their horrid state is a genetic memory of murder.

I don't know if this was by design or coincidence, but they resemble what I think the Morlocks looked like in The Time Traveller. By hook or by crook though, I like these guys more for it.

I think Wells, and Burroughs were of the same time and I wonder myself if they were likely inspired by some of the same ideas of a civilized world not far enough removed from a chaotic, barbaric past. The description of Morlocks and Gorbuses were similar enough that I was concerned when initiating the piece.

It's definitely hard to say authors of the same era aren't inspired in similar ways, especially two authors so close to the Industrial Revolution's time. The Morlocks and creatures of Burroughs' works certainly seem to serve as reminders that we haven't come as far as we think, or even that things like capitalism could make us every bit the savage as what we've evolved from.

I always think of the Industrial Revolution when I think of steampunk (not sure if I'm right or wrong in that), so the Morlock reference is a little fitting. Of course, being so closely related to the source material must have only made designing this characters even iffier for you.

Glad you like it. The atmosphere comes largely from messing around with a bunch of textured brushes with scatter and lots of variability of angle, size, and opacity.
